By the way, what happened to him?  He seems to have disappeared after his recent triumphant return.

Well you see, in 2007 people started getting bored with the well-established, conservative Prime Minister, and voted him out for the sake of arbitrary change.  So now we have Kevin "Mister China" Rudd in charge:

And his idiot Minister of Communications lackey, Stephen Conroy:

And, well, they want to police the Internet.  The guise is reducing child pornography, but that's getting less and less believable every day as the real motivation behind this.  It'd be a WWW filter, that can block anything the government deems inappropriate (without any check on this blacklist).

As for this particular issue... obviously it doesn't make any sense.  Perhaps they're trying to set a precedent of making the ISPs do their bidding (necessary for the proposed filter), or maybe they want to install their own software on everyone's computers, with a back door.

There'll be another federal election soon (this year hopefully), so hopefully they'll get voted out.  In any case, I have my plane tickets for the US in September.  Maybe I'll accidentally lose my return ticket.

..Australia sounds sucky, you have ^@!$ internet or none at all, and when you by miraculous feats achieve internetness, they will try to take it away from you in the case you get the random "date a girl near you!" adware on your pc. >_>;

I think I might have figured out why they want to do this.

Obviously it won't actually help anyone - the ability to freely use the Internet without having to install anti-virus software (or even worse, Government anti-virus software) is much more important than the risk of viruses.  People don't care, and they don't need to be spoonfed by the government.

In the article, the argument for this was not very convincing, and specifically mentioned botnets.  Maybe this is payback for Operation Titstorm, and the government just wants to ensure that a DDoS attack isn't likely to happen again.  If this is the reason, then it's an unimaginably selfish use of the government's resources.

It really isn't all that bad here; it isn't a police state and the media seems relatively free... for now.  If the Internet filter happens, though, things are going to get very ugly very quickly.  Mark my words.

California weighs 'digital adverts' on number plates

http://news.bbc.co.u...da/10368899.stm

^ California is weighing whether to allow advert-broadcasting digital number plates on vehicles, in a bid to raise revenue for the cash-strapped state.  Drivers could select messages to display and could earn rewards from advertisers that pay the state.  At least one firm, in San Francisco, is developing an electronic number plate that would scroll adverts while a car is stopped at lights and in congestion.

Whale of a tale for couple yachting off Cape Town

http://www.bbc.co.uk...africa-10712323

^ A couple on a whale-watching trip off Cape Town, South Africa, say they had a lucky escape when a 10m (33ft) specimen leapt on to their yacht.  The southern right whale, a species known for poor eyesight, snapped the mast before sliding back into the water, said Paloma Werner.

Darth Vader Robs a Bank

"The economy has failed me for the last time."

^
Police in Setauket, Long Island report that the Dark Lord of the Sith entered the bank in question at 11:30 am this morning armed with a pistol (and presumably the infinite power of the Dark Side to boot). The cashiers complied with his demand to fork over the cash, because hey, are you going to argue with Darth Vader?

%@$!. I'd be scared too. That guy is known for his force chokes, I wouldn't want to argue with that. In a similar fashion:

Spider-man and Jedi Knights stop robber.

When a thief entered Comic Centre in Adelaide, Australia on Free Comic Book Day this past Saturday, he didn't expect to have his dastardly plot foiled by masked heroes. This is exactly what happened to him as he attempted to steal a book valued at $150.

Michael Baulderstone, 45, owns the comic store and was dressed up as Spider-Man for the event. He caught the thief red-handed and attempted to get the book back. To help out, two Jedi Knights and someone dressed as the Flash blocked off the entrance to prevent the thief from leaving.

"The thief didn't have much of a choice but to hand the book back after a little bit of a scuffle," Baulderstone told reporters. 40 comic book fans were in the store, and comic fans can be quite protective of what they love, so it obviously wasn't the best place for a heist. The thief was probably taking Free Comic Book Day too literally, as the occasion doesn't mean you can just walk into a store and take whatever you want.

It's likely going to be pretty embarrassing for the thief to explain to his cell-mates how he got caught. "No, seriously, Spider-Man caught me in his webbing! And Jedi Knights used the force to hold the door closed! I had no choice but to give up!" And then he'll probably get shanked. Don't steal comics kids.
