But Dei, you're missing out the other important part, they could also lose money. To get the shares in the first place you have to buy them. With money. And then hope you can someday sell them at a profit. And dividends are never guaranteed, only if the company feels generous.

And usually the companies who are stable enough to have constant dividends (eg. Hershey dishes out dividends 4 times a year) are pretty costly in share price. One of my classmates joked that he wanted to invest in Hershey and my tutor asked him which bank was he gonna rob to get the $12000 capital needed for a share lot.

You need time too when you're buying shares. Any fool who just picks a random stock to invest without researching into the company's condition or monitoring it after he buys the stock would be doomed. Sure you can pay people to do that, but that's even more money spent (they collect commissions)
