The "Climategate" Scandal

Quote

If you own any shares in alternative energy companies I should start dumping them NOW. The conspiracy behind the Anthropogenic Global Warming myth (aka AGW; aka ManBearPig) has been suddenly, brutally and quite deliciously exposed after a hacker broke into the computers at the University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit (aka  CRU) and released 61 megabytes of confidential files onto the internet. (Hat tip: Watts Up With That)

Am I the only one who finds this situation somewhat disturbing?

Discuss.

No... but to be fair... when has any of this made front page news? it won't... It's all a way to control and manipulate the people. I mean I had an astronomy teacher that told us exactly how the climate was going to change... and she's been spot on.

I laugh at the allegations now, and will always laugh at them. "control the media control the people"

and all I can do is laugh at Commander Loonies post... I can't really say much more then this... because the rules of this forum limit our speech. In fact reading over this I'm guaranteed to have broken the "rules."

Read about this earlier. It really doesn't surprise me, Science + Politics = Bad/Corrupted Science in my humble opinion.

You haven't broken any as far as I can tell. Just keep your posts clean. :)

Heh I read about this two and saw this more as confirmation of something I already knew.

Hm. All the climate change sceptics are jumping on this data as proof that global warming/climate change is a hoax, yet they haven't really got much actual evidence.  I mean, this data is supposedly a *random* sample of material from the Climate Research Unit, but how do we know that it hasn't itself been manipulated?

I find it a bit too much of a coincidence that it happens to have so much anti global warming material.  Indeed, one of the emails ive seen bandied about is from November 1999 - 10 years ago. What are the odds that in 10 years worth of emails a random sample would have so much convenient "evidence"?

Besides which, even if it turns out that climate change *is* a natural occurrence, surely it is still a good idea for us to make more efficient use of the natural resources our planet provides and reduce the pollution we dump into the ground/sea/air?

EDIT: Not to mention the author of the blog quoted in the OP describes himself as:

The European Socialist Superstate; Gordon Brown; taxes; big government; the “global warming” myth; bad food; weak coffee; the Nanny State; etc.

IMHO...

The whole thing just reeks of Y2K with no specified end date to me. Too many people stand to gain too much at the expense of too many others due to mass hysteria and what is effectively brainwashing for me to take climate change as an honest concern by worried scientists/politicians.

Pay money or die; it's not exactly a new concept.

Y2K almost looks the inspiration or a test case for this. Would people really go bat**** insane believing everything you tell them about something they don't understand and go into a buying frenzy that they think might save their lives?
Yes. Ok, Climate Change is on.

Another thing is... I just don't think that humanity accidentally destroying the planet's climate in 200 years is particularly plausible.

Can we even really make any significant judgments on the planet's climate in such a short time? It's not very long in the life of the planet or its climate. Ice ages have lasted how many thousands of years after all.

Ok, two years on from "ClimateGate" and a new independent study has reported initial findings that confirm the existence of global warming.

Wait... They haven't done that already?

My opinion/rant/tirade on Global Warming:

Yes, the globe is warming BUT, it's doing that all by itself, human contribution is minimal. Now I don't know if this is true or not but I had a geology teacher say that a single volcanic eruption throws more CO2 into the air than all of mankind's' unnatural CO2 production since the Industrial Revolution. Something that I think people fail to understand is that the Earth has warmed up and cooled down innumerable times for past 4 billion years. We always see sad images of polar bears alone in the open ocean stranded on a single piece of ice and everyone laments the decline of arctic animals, they seem to think that there have always been polar bears in the arctic and that the earth's climate is supposed to remain in an eternal static state. Well extinction is just part of life. Them polar bears are going extinct and there's nothing we can do about it except keep them in zoos and clone them.

The other day in my biology class we spent a whole lesson on global warming (even though we were in the chapter on genetics). And he showed us these sad slideshows on youtube about islands in the pacific that are slowly being flooded and the inhabitants suffering and being forced to move to new foreign lands and go through all the grief of starting life from scratch. Well that's sad and all but I can't help but think: so what? They just have to get over it and adapt to their new circumstances. That's what we humans do right? The video made it seem like it was our fault and we need to fix it somehow. These people felt as though it was their inalienable right to stay on that island and that mother nature should be sued. Honestly, this whole entitlement mentality that prevails among the masses today is like a disease, all of this welfare and social medicine and people thinking that they deserve stuff just for simply being alive. That's a whole other topic though. Also, sure it sucks for these people on these islands, but what if it benefited other people elsewhere? Perhaps rising sea-levels would make climates that were previously barren and unproductive now arable and people living in such desolate lands can now start farming. Think of all the cold uninhabitable wastelands of Canada and Russia, with rising temperatures all of these places would perhaps become habitable.

So to sum it all up. Yes I think global warming is occurring but I think its just way overhyped by the media. We can't do anything to stop it. We should however try our best to curb pollution and deforestation and whatnot, for the simple fact that it's hazardous for us and the natural environment for reasons other than global warming.

End of rant.

Honestly, past year, actually past two years have proven to me it's all bullshit.
In the way that we just do not know what the %@$! is going on.

I also want to take the Global Cooling scare. Don't know what that is? LMGTFY: http://en.wikipedia..../Global_cooling

In the 1960's/1970's they were afraid we were heading for a new ice age because global tempratures DROPPED sharply.
This started in 1940. So with tonnes more soot and CO2 in the atmosphere, the earth started to cool drastically.

You can't explain that!

Also: Urban Heat Islands.

Most meteorological stations are now situated near or in towns/cities. These are overall a few degrees warmer than the surrounding lands. There have been many reports that areas where the temperatures increased in cities, saw a decrease in average temperature in the lands surrounding that town.

@Piglet. From the article i linked:

Quote

Since the 1950s, the average temperature over land has increased by 1C, the group found.

They also report that although the urban heat island effect is real - which is well-established - it is not behind the warming registered by the majority of weather stations around the world.

They also showed that in the US, weather stations rated as "high quality" by Noaa showed the same warming trend as those rated as "low quality".

What the study does not point out is that the earth has overall been warming at a fairly even pace since the last ice age ended. Perhaps man was cooking too many mammoths back then?
