The key term is useful purpose. The "discussions" are hardly discussions, or they don't last very long. 99.9% of youtube comments are something along the lines of: OMG wut a n00b fuk u"

That hardly qualifies as discussion. They should either get rid of the whole function or apply strict censoring.

And I thought the more views a video has increases the popularity?

Well it is useful for the video creators. Providing they can resist the urge to set people on fire through the internet - and boy can that be difficult sometimes.
Most viewed, most discussed and most favorited all contribute to video popularity.
So again. DANCE PUPPETS, DANCE!

Honestly, I can't understand why people care about youtube vids and their popularity.
It's illogical to say that a Mac is better than a PC, because a Mac itself is a PC.

Yeah man. I totally don't understand either, it's not like people earn money from videos on youtube. I can't exactly understand why ratings on TV are important either, must have something to do with appreciation of all those volunteers in the TV business.

The youtube comment section, that grinds my gears. They should just get rid of it. It serves no useful purpose.

As infuriating, frustrating and outright hair-shredding as it is to watch idiots engage eahother in grammatical violence and belittling the crap out of eachother on a video with a cute kitten, sometimes it gives you some reading material if you're listening to a video :P To bring intelligence into a YouTube discussion is to put it to death. Too many intellectually challenged people with no moderation.

Internet badasses. People who threaten others online and say things like "I'm gonna beat the sh*t out of you" or "I'm gonna kill you" when in fact they would never do a f*cking thing against anyone in real life. It's extremely easy to say you're gonna kill somone or beat them up, but actually doing it? Oh please.

This one time, on Facebook, some 14 year old girl that looked like a dude threatened to smash my face in cos I wouldn't shut up about correcting some kid's horrible grammar. So I drew her into an inescapable bloodbath of scrutiny, trolling her naive ass while she banged on with her rage. It's too easy to troll these halfwits sometimes!

No i do get the fact that people do get money from it, but still, it's the internets. One should not care about popularity on the itnernets imho.

Jesus! That's what I'm talking about, a prime example of an internet badass who makes violent death threats online but would be scared shitless if it came down to a real life confrontation. She would sh*t her pants and run if she met you face to face.

That's not narrow-minded.

I am all happy for you and anyone who can make a living out of youtube vids, or atleast gets money from it. I just don't understand what drives you to do it. Why you would make those video's JUST to make a living out of it.

Well, for one, it's always a laugh making 'em.

Second, he probably wants to improve his video editing skills. Not to mention it just being a past-time which he found a way to make money off.

Honestly, I can't understand why people care about youtube vids and their popularity.

Incapable of understanding why people care about YouTube videos. YouTube videos are an equal medium comparable to TV or any other kind of show found on the internet. Surely you understand why people care about those? Entertainment. This can be achieved in a multitude of ways, informative videos, comedy videos, you name it. People like to spend their time watching them for the same reason they like watching TV, be it reality shows, movies, cartoons or the discovery channel. All of these are comparable to partners/developers on websites and other platforms of which YouTube is one of the biggest - if not the biggest. I honestly don't see any reason to explain why people care about them from a viewer standpoint.

Now lets look at it from a developer standpoint. They get to create videos, much like TV producers develop shows or directors develop movies for the purpose of catching an audience. What can be achieved out of said audience? Either it can merely be a recognition for the work you put into something you enjoyed making or it can be to make an actual living out of it.

So why then does popularity matter? Quite simple. Popularity equals more views and a bigger audience. This equals more attention and recognition, and in some cases more money. The exact same reason TV shows require popularity. The exact same reason any form of media requires popularity. Without popularity those forms of media would no longer continue to exist as they would be effectively pointless.

Whether or not you like a specific form of media, in this case YouTube - which may I add is an incredibly broad form of media that covers all kinds of people and interests so I am sure even you would find entertainment out of it - is subjective. But surely you can understand why people care about them, and their popularity? If not, I do consider that very narrow-minded.

This is different for everyone. For myself it comes down to this; Do I want to spend hours, days, weeks working on something JUST so I can earn money? (Because we all need to earn money in western society if we want to accomplish anything)

No. I do not. That is why I do not want to have a different, 'more general' job working somewhere or delivering mail as I have in the past. There's nothing wrong with this, you may even find it enjoyable and in that case great! Awesome! But I do not. I don't want to do something that I don't enjoy for the sake of making money.
YouTube for me started out as a mere hobby, I liked making those videos from a creative perspective. Getting recognition for them from other people was quite nice. Not because I desperately require attention - I'm probably one of the least attention wanting people I can think of myself - but because it is nice that people appreciate something you put quite a lot of work into. Surely this is not too difficult to grasp? When the chance of making money from it appeared I gladly took it. Now I can literally be creative and while doing so amuse literally thousands of people, I get to make something I immensely enjoy and make money out of it so I can actually.. you know.. get around in the western society. Furthermore, before I even thought about becoming a partner myself I watched YouTube for the plain and simple reason that it - to me - was ten times more enjoyable than any show you could find on TV.

The fact that you seemed incapable of understanding this judging by your previous replies made me come to the conclusion that you had a rather narrow-minded view about this. That is all. Need I elaborate more?

Wel Haasth, I can understand you like doing it very much. But i just don't get it that you'd do it for earning money. As a side thing it's cool, awesome. I very much like things like Yogscast so i do enjoy watching them.

But okay I see I somehow offended you so I will just let it rest.
