For starters, i, as a matter of fact had one hell of a space battle in EAW...2v2 skirmish, Empire vs Empire. Lots of TIE battles and Capital ship shoot-outs. It was nuts!

Thank you Petroglyph for being here in the dark ages of RTS gaming! May your bright torch lead the way for other developers led astray. You make me happy as long as you stay alive, and I will dedicate my life to thee to make this dream come true!

At first it was weird. Didn't like it much. Then it really grew on me.
It's a lot like Operation Flashpoint in that respect really... plus the combat is very similar.
