In Topic: The beginnings of the RTS genre - an AMA with Joe Bostic

My favorite C&C game would be the original Command & Conquer. It was just enough advanced from Dune II yet not so loaded with features that came with later iterations of the genre. It was the most "pure" of the RTS genre. The biggest thing that made C&C much easier to play than Dune II is the drag-select for units and context sensitive mouse commands (click on unit to attack, click on ground to move). C&C 4 is interesting and fun, but since it is oriented away from traditional base building and more toward PvP, it doesn't have that nostalgic magic of the original RTS formula that I enjoy. There is just something appealing about building up an "impenetrable" fortress base while amassing a juggernaut of an army before clashing with the enemy in earnest.
