Unselectable units problem

Has anyone found a fix to the unselectable units problem that crops up in mods (although I've heard it might appear in unaltered games as well)?  This is the problem where, after playing for a long time (300+ game days)with lots of units, units in space and ground battles suddenly become unselectable and hard points disappear.  You can then no longer move units on the Galatic map as well.

I've searched around the forums and web and have found that others have eincountered this issue as well.  However, no one has posted a fix, if there is one.
