Hey guys.

I made this thread to discuss whether global warming exists or not.

Rules to prevent lockage:
1. No flaming
2. No insulting
3. No sarcasm
4. No spamming

There were more, but I forgot them... As usual. Any breaking of these rules more then once I will request the perpertrator to cease posting on this thread, harsh as it sounds. I will also, of course, stick to the rules.

So... Post your thoughts.
Keep it smart, reasonable, and rational.

While global warming is definately real, I honest don't believe humanity has much to do with it. Contrary to popular belief, the Earth does, in fact, fluctuate temperatures (lol, ice ages).

Actually, the latest studies have not only confirmed that global warming is real, but confirmed that it is a direct result of human action.

This isn't an issue for us to "debate". Whatever we decide, or disagree on - it's meaningless. Leave the science to the scientists, please - they actually know what they're talking about.

Mother Earth moves in cycles. Before when my dad first came to Massachusetts it never snowed. Then had a few blizzards in the 90s. 2000 have been really snowy, except for this year. Just moves in cycles.

Actually, Jack and Klarin, the temperatures are stil warming up from the Little Ice Age which was between the 14th and 19th century, I beieve. If you didn't ow about it, yu shuld look it up. Quite interesting, actually.

Some irony about "global warming":

At a college this morning, they were planning to sho Al Gore's movie, "An inconvienent Truth", which is trying to warn the public about the dangers of Global Warming. They had to cancel ue to ice storms.

Congress was planning to have a session today to discuss global warming, but as hadto cancel due to cold weather.

So? Maybe you dont realize that Global Warming is happening slowly...

You've been watching too many movies doomtrooper, no in the real world the "day after tomorow" wont really happen. No global warming wont have visible effects in a few weeks. This kind of global event will take many years to show results. But by then, it is too late to take action.

So sure you may laugh about "ironies" but facts are facts. And quoting obscure and silly facts such as a movie cancellation because of an ice storm only promotes ignorance.

popcorn, Global Warming could trigger something that occured relatively quickly. While maybe not as rapid as tDaT but there could be some sort of Environmental event.

That's a possibility, but it's not anywhere near as probable as the slow buildup. Now, yes, there will be "jump points," where the process accelerates greatly - for example, the melting of the permafrost will trigger a massive temperature jump - but catastrophic events are improbable. Most likely, the biggest thing that would happen is the western Antarctic ice cap breaking off and raises sea levels by ~6 meters. There is, of course, the possibility of bigger storms, but that's not something I know with much certainty.

I request that this thread be locked, for reasons I stated in my earlier post.

I believe this is all happening because of humans... and to a degree the earth on its own too. How many cities have I lived in with disgusting yellow/green grossness hovering over the ground? LA and Vegas are among the worst I've lived in. Explain how that alone doesnt cause something bad?

If you can I'll be MIGHTY IMPRESSED. I and my whole family have sinus clogged snots all year in Vegas. I go to Seattle or Florida on holiday for 2 weeks and I'm cured.

Makes perfect sense to me humans are making a muck of this planet.

Doomtrooper, please stop spouting nonsense in threads when you don't know anything about them. It has already been explained to you multiple times that "global warming" does not cause 80 degree temperatures in Antarctica. Nobody is willing to debate you anymore, as you keep rehashing the same pseudoscientific talking points and calling people idiots when they call you on it. If you can't intelligently look at the facts, it's best not to bring up the subject in the first place.

Sorry Doomtrooper but I've gpt to say Tokakeke's right. Read this quote again and you might understand what I mean.

“A little learning is a dangerous thing; drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring: there shallow draughts intoxicate the brain, and drinking largely sobers us again."

What is saying dude is thtat a small amount of knowledge can cause people to think they are more expert than they really are.

I say Global warming is natural.
http://www.worldnetd...RTICLE_ID=49329
http://www.nationalc...rs-galileo.html

^_^ Its all a farce since the politicians want to make money off the oil. All the electric cars got destroyed while hydrogen cars are having a hard time getting onto the streets. My nose keeps getting clogged while in Europe my nose was clean. Its a different place but still different way of life. If the politicians actually cared about the environment they'd actually keep the electric cars instead of shredding them to bits and pieces.

I also spoke with my uncle and he told me all Co2 is is energy nothing more for the trees to use and turn back into oxygen. Well there are some people actually trying but not much is being shown over the news just negative crap blah blah blah boring crap that I can't even look at.

Global Warming IS a natural Event, problem is that Human Intervention has caused it to spiral out of control as we dump millions of tonnes of C02 into the atmosphere.

The Natural CO2 level is around 220 PPM. That is what makes our planet livable. At the moment we are at around 380 PPM. With current trends by 2050 we will be above 500 PPM. When we breach 450 PPM then we are royally screwed.

That's what... one guy with a theory? Several people? He may have some new angle to explore but... are you seriously going to ignore a whole community of scientists who do this for a living and say it's made up for political gain. The scientific community cant even get the administration to take a leap off the carbon boat into new renewable fuels without a ton of meetings.

So you're saying we should do nothing then. Makes perfect sense. Roll the dice my friend and see what happens.

In the end the earth will destroy all humans anyway... like a bad rash. The sun will expand in it's dying years and eat the planet anyway. Who cares about now until then right. Thats the problem with people now... short-sighted views with a flippant attitude about tomorrow. I have kids I'd like to see enjoy some of the things I did. Or their kids. I'm sure things will change on natural scales but like Fosh mentioned... we are speeding up these processes like madmen with torches in Salem.

About the sun expanding: Wouldn't that happen in millions, if not, billions of years?

My dad is doing a story on Global Warming. I'll try to post a link asap.

The Sun has at least another 8 or 9 Billion Years before it starts to expand.

Global Warming is going to make the Earth Unlivable far before we get to that stage however. If we do get above 450 PPM. or is it 480.. then the Methane Stores at the bottom of the ocean will be able to escape from its dissolved status.

Actually, it's roughly 5 billion years before the solar expansion.

What's even worse than that, though, Fosh, is that the permafrost will melt, releasing methane then - it's a process that's already beginning. That'll accelerate the time until the methane in the ocean is released, as compared to a purely carbon dioxide based warming.

Permafrost is that ice located in the bottom of the ocean that is basically frozen methane, or ice with methane mixed with it, yes?

Permafrost is what Siberia is under ;)

It means that the entire ground is frozen, not a thin layer of frost.
