Thus begins The Manual, the fifty-two page explicit and revealing epic of the Angriffsziel Erde, known to some as Universe at War: Earth Assault. Previously available to a select few identified only as The Consumers, I have wrested this tome from their exclusive vaults and brought it forth; your erudition is paramount.
Go on, read it. For if tomorrow I no longer exist, you now understand why.

You will still exist, the manual does not contain everything.
(I have my manual, but thanks anyway!)

Seriously next game you make you should submit the draft version of the manual to the community so we can point out the mistakes BEFORE you sell it. You could have the manual draft as part of the beta; then people will fix the manual for you and their need for information will be satiated. Its the perfect plan

We can split the work 50/50. You guys write all the backstory stuff and then send it to the community and we'll write about the combat use of the units and proofread the rest of it. After the manual gets sent back and forth a few times it should be Pulitzer Prize material

Hey that's actually a pretty cool idea.

"Double left clicking will order the units to the target
without attacking along the way."
should be
"Double left clicking on a unit will select all units of that type on screen."

/agreed
I'd really like that. It was so cool to read the manuals of SC and earth 2150 before playing the game... With these long stories and emails in the manual that seemed so real.
To sad this isn't done in today's industry. :/

The last game I had which came in a giant cardboard box was C&C Generals. After that everything for came in the form of medium-sized plastic boxes except for WiC which came in a medium-sized cardboard box and C&C 3 which never physically came at all.

I've just reinstalled earth 2160.
I LOVE this box. It got a big wallpaper with the techtrees (even though it's a bit... flawed), a big manual (stories contradict themselves >.>), a case with a DVD and a soundtrack CD (DVD isn't needed to play the game after being installed) and a thing that blinks with a blue LED every time it recognizes movements.
Everything fits perfectly into a really beatiful box and the movement sensor makes it really cool.
(No, it's not a collector's edition)
I'd really like to see something like this in a new game...
